RMAF Hawk emerged champion

LABUAN, 19 July : RMAF Hawk emerged as this year champion in the 5th edition of the Labuan Sixes Cricket Carnival held from the 17-18 July 2010. In all, 12 teams took part in this years event. Two teams from host Labuan, two more from Sabah and 1 other came from Miri. The rest of the 7 other teams were from Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

Although dampened by rainfall that kept pouring over both days, organisers, Labuan Cricket Association (LACA) manage to overcome these challenges to complete the tournament by 6.00pm yesterday (Sunday). Teams were beaming with confidence and gratitude as they were able to maximise their play with opportunities given by the draw to participate in the tournament by virtue of having a plemininary round followed by play extended to Champions and Plate Division giving each team an opportunity to play three to six matches over the period of the tournament.

In the final match, RMAF Hawk with two national players in their side, elected to field and put Kelab Sukan MAS (Malaysia Airlines) into bat. From the five overs, MAS skipper Paramanathan (13 runs) and Pankaj. G(23runs n.o) knocked a score total of 48 runs with 2 wickets fallen from the bowling off Hairil and Zaidin in the first and fifth overs. In reply, the airmen Hawks completed their victory with passing the the required 49 runs to win in the last over with three balls to spare again with a successful batting off Hairil (34 runs n.o).

Mugwalla Selangor CC had to help themselves with the Plate Division Runner up placing after badlight and light downpour forced a bowl out between them and RMAF Rajawali by the latter winning by 1 point.

President of Labuan Cricket, Dr Zain Azrai Zainuri was on hand to personally welcome Guest of Honour Datuk Hj Yussof Mohamad, Chairman of Liberty Port Labuan and President for Labuan Malay Chamber of Commerce. In his address he thanked Rintis Malay Motors Sdn Bhd and Klinik Bakti Group for their corporate partnership with LACA in making this year’s event a truly memorable and successful outing for enthusiast from all over Malaysia to come and visit Labuan and make the island a new landmark for cricket carnival every July in the local calendar of events.

Member of Parliament for Labuan, Datuk Hj Yussof Mahal  even though being away from the island during this event, has once again for the third year has given his approval and committed to his pledge and support to the development and improvement for Cricket on the island.

Team players and officials from all teams were much impressed by the generous and warm hospitable extension of friendship and assistance by not only the organisers for the event but more the locals here during their brief stay and are looking forward to next year’s Sixes event once again.
